Minnesota's Marcus LeVesseur replaces Aaron Riley against Cody McKenzie at UFC on Fuel 3
|
McKenzie revealed the change on Twitter, and MMATorch confirmed the booking with LeVesseur, who has signed a four-fight deal with the UFC.
"It's been a long time coming," LeVesseur commented. "And I can't wait to get in there."
The 29-year-old LeVesseur was a four-time Division III wrestling champion at Minnesota's Augsburg College, posting an undefeated record throughout his collegiate career. He brings a 21-5 record with him into his UFC debut, and has won three straight fights and is 10-2 in his last 12.
McKenzie has been submitted in two straight fights, the only losses in his MMA career, to Yves Edwards and Vagner Rocha. A third straight loss will likely send him out of the Octagon.
UFC on Fuel 3 takes place May 15 in Fairfax, Va., headlined by the featherweight bout between Dustin Poirier and "The Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung.
Penick's Analysis: LeVesseur is a very talented lightweight, and I've seen him multiple times on local shows here in Minnesota. Even though he's taking this fight on short notice, this is a fight he can absolutely win, and he could be another solid addition to the UFC's most packed division at 155 lbs. I'm definitely excited to see what he can do inside the Octagon after seeing him in several local shows.

ASK THE TORCH: Amadi Answers reader questions on Condit-GSP entertainment level, Interim Titles, Anderson Silva vs. Jon Jones
|
A: It's not true. As a matter of fact, not only is it not true, but it saddens me that people even take this stance against athletes fighting to win.
First of all, Carlos Condit is one of, if not the most consistently entertaining fighters in mixed martial arts. It blows my mind that a fighter like him can spend ten years of his life finishing fighters left and right, go the distance just twice and still be written off as a "technical bore."
Heading into the Nick Diaz fight, most people figured Condit would lose because on paper his usual unbelievably aggressive style would play right into Diaz's hands. Condit and his team put together a style to counter Diaz's pressure fighting tactics and they got vilified for it; I think that's ridiculous.
The fact is there are some fighters that you just can't beat in an entertaining fashion and Nick Diaz is one of them. Knocking Nick Diaz out is more or less off the table, so aggressively pursuing that type of finish is mostly a fruitless endeavor. The Diaz brothers routinely set records with the amount of punches they land in fights so standing in the pocket and trying to outland them there is obviously a mistake too. Nick Diaz is probably a better grappler than Carlos Condit, so he probably wasn't going to win there either.
Really, if Condit were to fight Diaz the way he usually fights, he would have lost. And the thing about it is, fans wouldn't respect him for that. We saw Donald Cerrone try to push the pace against Nick Diaz last December, and he got hacked apart for his troubles.
Did anyone praise Cerrone for being exciting? No. People ridiculed him for playing right into Diaz's hands and threw the whole Jackson's MMA team under the bus for coming in with such a piss poor gameplan.
As far as Georges St-Pierre goes, people need to let go of the idea that GSP was ever some sort balls to the wall striker who aggressively pursued knockouts; the guy won his UFC debut by wrestling Karo Parisyan to the ground and grappling him en route to a three round decision.
I'm not going to lie and say that St-Pierre hasn't become a bit risk averse over the years, but he's also not the absolute worst fighter in the word to watch either.
Whenever Condit and St-Pierre meet, I expect GSP to look to get the fight to the floor as often as he can and I expect Condit to try to look to fly through the air and knock St-Pierre unconscious whenever he can. If Carlos Condit comes out looking to point fight with St-Pierre, he'd be playing into his GSP's strengths and he'd probably lose.
Elvin writes: Why was Dana White so quick to create an interim belt for the welterweight division but balked at the idea for an interim Light Heavyweight belt when Shogun was out for a year plus?
A: First of all, Shogun wasn't out for a year plus; he wasn't even out for a year. Rua won the UFC Light Heavyweight Title on May 8, 2010 and then next fought on March 19, 2011.
Georges St-Pierre suffered a knee injury that stopped him from defending his title last October and then another injury that prevented him from fighting last February. For a while it was doubtful GSP would even be able to compete in 2012. It's already been over a year since GSP's last title defense and if he has any sort of setback in his recovery, it could be even longer before we see him in the Octagon.
GSP was out for so long and there were so many contenders that it actually made sense for the UFC to create an interim championship. Well at least it did before Condit decided not fight again until St-Pierre returned.
Back in 2010, Rashad Evans was the clear number one contender and there weren't even any other obvious contenders to fight him for an interim championship.
Yanni writes: I'd love your opinion on Anderson Silva vs. Jon Jones at 205lbs (assuming the fight to take place tomorrow, with both fighters uninjured).
A: Anderson Silva is probably the best MMA fighter we've seen to this point, but Jon Jones would be a horrible style match up for him; he just has too many physical advantages, including being 13 years Silva's junior.
As great as Anderson Silva is, if Jones is overwhelming and physically dominating light heavyweights, why do people think bringing in middleweights is the answer? At the end of the day, even the greatest middleweight of all time is still just a middleweight.

Jose Aldo expected to meet Erik Koch in next title defense at UFC 147 or UFC 149
|
With the booking of Hatsu Hioki vs. Ricardo Lamas today, as well as the upcoming featherweight main event between Dustin Poirier and "The Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung at UFC on Fuel 3, Koch was the top unbooked featherweight, and many expected this bout to be made.
Roufus told MMATorch Columnist Rich Hansen earlier this month that Koch was more than willing to take the fight against Aldo, and it appears that's just what he'll get.
The 23-year-old Koch holds a 13-1 record, with his sole loss coming against Aldo's last challenger, Chad Mendes, by decision in the WEC. Since then, he's won four straight, including two in the Octagon. After knocking out Raphael Assuncao in his UFC debut last March, he defeated Ultimate Fighter 12 winner Jonathan Brookins last September. An injury took him out of a bout with Poirier in February, but now he'll leap into his title opportunity in his return from injury.
The bout will take place either in June in Brazil, or as planned at UFC 149 in Calgary. A determination and announcement on that front is expected shortly.
Penick's Analysis: This is a huge opportunity for Koch, and with everyone else booked he's definitely the right option here for the title fight. At 23, a loss to the best in the world will only be a minor career setback, and he absolutely has the skills to pull off the upset and become one of the youngest champions in UFC history himself. It should be a great title fight in the 145 lb. division, and whether it takes place in June in Brazil or July in Calgary it will be a really entertaining fight.

UFC 150 official for August 11 in Denver, Ben Henderson vs. Frankie Edgar II reportedly to headline
|
UFC officials confirmed the event to The Denver Post, also confirming a middleweight bout between Luiz Cane and Yushin Okami, as well as a lightweight bout between Dennis Hallman and Thiago Tavares, are both set for the event.
Additionally, @FrontRowBrian on Twitter and MMAJunkie.com both report that the event is expected to host the Lightweight Championship rematch between Ben Henderson and Frankie Edgar.
The UFC made their first appearance at the Pepsi Center last September, with Jon Jones defeating Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in the Light Heavyweight Championship main event at UFC 135.
Cane is making his middleweight debut after losing his third fight in four bouts at UFC 134 last August. That loss came against a debuting Stanislav Nedkov, and dropped him to 4-4 overall in his UFC run.
Okami hopes to bounce back from consecutive losses, knockout stoppages against Anderson Silva last August and Tim Boetsch in February. In the most recent fight, he was well ahead on the scorecards into the third before getting stopped by a vicious series of strikes by Boetsch on the cage.
Hallman and Tavares both enter off of victories, with Hallman stopping John Makdessi in December at UFC 140, and Tavares winning two straight over Spencer Fisher and Sam Stout.
Penick's Analysis: These are three solid fights for the card already. Cane at middleweight is an intriguing proposition, and he'll have a very tough fight in Okami to try to make a statement. Hallman-Tavares is a solid bout for each in off of their wins, and the Lightweight Title rematch should be a fantastic main event. All in all, a very good start to filling up this card.

Dana White still upset with Alistair Overeem, explains decision to remove him from UFC 146 main event
|
Overeem tested positive for an elevated T/E ratio at 14:1 in a surprise pre-fight drug test for the event in March, and he will answer for that test at Tuesday's hearing. However, UFC President Dana White announced Friday that Frank Mir will step in for Overeem against JDS, regardless of Tuesday's outcome. On Saturday night, following UFC 145, White explained that they simply didn't have any more time to wait, and they're also not confident Overeem will be licensed by the commission.
"What happened with this whole thing was I've got my marketing people terrorizing me," White said after the event (transcribed by MMAjunkie.com. "It just gets to the point where you've got to run your business. I tried to wait."
"Anybody who knows anything abut the pay-per-view business, we're already past the deadline. We've got to run with it, and I'm not feeling too optimistic (about Overeem's chances to gain licensure)... There's so much more that goes into this that you guys don't know. If we don't get into the loop on pay-per-view, you don't get in a lot of the systems. There's just so many things that we have to do to run the business."
White said Mir made the most sense to step in for Overeem, though Fabricio Werdum was also considered as a replacement. Ultimately, Werdum wanted to remain on the UFC 147 card in Brazil, and Mir was already preparing for a May 26 fight. And for Overeem? White's not sure what the NSAC will ultimately do, but he's still upset with the Dutch heavyweight for being in this position in the first place.
"I honestly don't know what they're going to do to that dude," White said. "I'm not very optimistic about it... I'm still angry. I'm not angry with the commission. The commission is doing their job. That's what they do.
"I sat down in a room with Alistair, and he told me, 'They can test me anytime they want. I'm the most tested athlete in all of sports.'"
Could that mean the end of Overeem's UFC run after just one fight? White's still not sure, but Tuesday's hearing - combined with Overeem's previous statements to White and Lorenzo Fertitta - certainly don't bode well for him continuing on in the organization.
"We'll see what happens," White said of Overeem's future with the organization. "I don't know, man. This isn't really my deal."
"I've had situations with lots of people. It's how you [expletive] handle yourself as a man in life, in business and everything else. You sit down and tell me one thing and it's not true, or you're doing another thing, then [expletive] you."
Penick's Analysis: Pulling Overeem was the right move, especially with the issues of promoting the next pay-per-view event. It's nowhere near a given that he'll say anything on Tuesday that will sway the Nevada State Athletic Commission. If he does somehow manage to get licensed, the UFC could place him in against Cain Velasquez, in a situation similar to Nick Diaz at UFC 137 last October. But when they aren't feeling confident on Overeem's hearing, and aren't happy with him in the first place, it made a lot more sense to pull him from the fight instead of having to promote a potentially tainted Heavyweight Title fight. Don't be surprised if Overeem is out of the UFC by Tuesday night if he fails to get licensed.

Report: Frank Trigg out at HD Net because of abuse and affair

Former UFC fighter Frank Trigg was a popular commentator for several MMA promotions on HDNet, so his absence from their broadcasts was surprising. The gossip website "The Dirty" reports his dismissal was not for business reasons.
MMA fighter Frank Trigg choked out his wife in front of his children on October 17th, 2011. They are now going through a VERY messy divorce and the children who saw the carnage are right in the middle of it. He no longer is employed at HDnet because he was sleeping with a co-worker, assistant producer, 23 year old Amy Vaughn. The company does not approve of the affair and abuse that they were made aware of soon after the incident and have chosen not to utilize his services as a commentator anymore.
HDNet did not respond to requests for comment. Trigg said he does not comment on personal business.
Trigg was 21-9 as a fighter and had a memorable loss to Matt Hughes. He fought in the UFC, Pride, Rumble on the Rock and BAMMA.

Dan Henderson Feels Jon Jones Isn't A Genuine Person
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer<Br><Br>
Dan Henderson is the next in line for a shot at Jon Jones's UFC Light Heavyweight Championship and gave his two cents on the Champ's personality and why he may rub fans the wrong way while talking to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour:<Br><br>
"I don't know, I think it all has to do with him being genuine. The fans sense when you are and you are not. I'm pretty much who I am all the time. I don't know if they get that impression from him. Not really, (if he gets the same impression from him) he was a little better after his fight with Rashad than he has been in the past, but I have not gotten that impression from him, no. His whole attitude, it's not completely not genuine, but I think that is what the fans are turned off by. I don't know him personally, so I can't say if it's genuine or not, it's just the impression that I think that is what the fans get."<Br><Br>
