Randy Orton Is A Work Horse, Stacy Keibler/George Clooney

– Many people that have tickets to the Night of Champions PPV stated they were invited to take part in a group survey to discuss upcoming WWE Studios films. They would be paid $20 to watch scenes from a film and discuss the positives and negatives. WWE has John Cena’s Family Reunion, Edge’s Inside Out, and the horror film No One Lives on the way.
– It has been reported that from August 27th through September 5th, World champion Randy Orton wrestled every day except for one that was used for ...

ESPN shows MMA some love with ESPY nominations

It’s not a stretch to question premium sports-news outlet ESPN’s love of Mixed Martial Arts. The organization rarely discusses the sport on its programming, has bumped heads with the UFC over fighter-pay, and even relegates its own show on the matter – MMA Live – to late night blocks rather than a time period when [...]

What happens when UFC 147 opponents share an elevator? (VIDEO)

During fight weeks, the UFC houses all of its fighters and staff at the same hotel. From Tuesday, when the fighters arrive for pay-per-view events, to Sunday, when they leave, there are plenty of opportunities for awkwardness as opponents see each other in hallways, restaurants and elevators.

Does this mean fights are breaking out left and right, or does it give fighters a chance to be pros who can have fun:

Not surprising to see Wanderlei Silva and Rich Franklin show the latter.

California State Athletic Commission facing major financial difficulties

Things are not going well for the California State Athletic Commission. It is having severe financial troubles, and recently censured George Dodd, its executive director, for not telling the board just how bad the money situation is.

MMA Fighting is reporting the group that oversees MMA events is already under water, and could run a deficit of $700,000 by the time the year is over.

"Without the ability to pay for even basic services, the Commission will have no choice but to cease operation immediately and cancel or postpone indefinitely all Commission regulated events," Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) director Denise Brown wrote in a recent letter to CSAC's executive director George Dodd.

Zuffa has three events scheduled for California in the next two months. UFC on Fuel 4 will be in San Jose, UFC on Fox 4 will take place in Los Angeles, and Strikeforce's championship bout between Ronda Rousey and Sarah Kaufman is set for San Diego. None of these events are expected to be affected, but California is a go-to state for Zuffa. California hosted four UFC and Strikeforce events in 2011.

Considering the state's financial problems, it's not a surprise to see the CSAC stumble. California is projecting a deficit of $4 billion and has been running in the red for four years. Its financial problems are so well-known there is a Wikipedia entry devoted to California's budget crisis.

But where the true problem lies for the CSAC is how to dig out of its hole. Without money, it can't run high-grossing events, but without high-grossing events, it can't earn money.

WALKER: Team Curran MMA Training Blog June 2012 - A Return to the Gym

By: Brad Walker, MMATorch Columnist

Team_Curran_MMA_Logo_180_6.jpeg
So I haven't obviously had much time of late to work on my training blog and now have made it a monthly piece. This has been one of my slowest months thus far as related to work in the gym, but full speed ahead when it comes to learning. I will get into that more in a bit but let me tell you my focus this month; understanding fitness. I regressed pretty heavily due to needing to remain home while my wife healed up from the birth of our second daughter, and I walked back into the gym at 340 heavy and achy pounds. Thankfully the gym helped me lower that number quickly and in the healthiest way possible.

In my time back I have re-lost 12 pounds and currently stand at 6'5 and 328 pounds of happy father. I finally spoke to Jeff about the best ways to lose healthy weight and it was like lighting a lightbulb above his head because he certainly didn't mind discussing a plan. After he took some time to recover from his bout with Johnny Eduardo and subsequent release from UFC we spoke at length about how I should attack my goals for fitness. I spend more than enough time on the treadmills at the gym already and have been badly neglecting classes - but I knew there was more I needed to know, and who better to ask than a guy who owns a gym, stays in shape and used to run a nutrition company? I knew it was the first step to finding my way into a healthy lifestyle and I could not have been more right.

As soon as Jeff and I started talking about caloric burn and empty calories I knew I had hit a home run. He taught me that your resting caloric burn is generally your weight in kilos multiplied in a simple equation to know how much you need to eat to maintain your current weight. It's simple enough math but when you realize that 500-1000 calories less per day amounts to 1-2 pounds a week things really come into focus. After our discussion he gave me contact information for a trainer who does strength training with many of the Team Curran pros and we decided to meet with him last week. As I walked in to meet Dave Davis for the first time in his speed center I was at least a little nervous, and toting both of my daughters with me.

My mind was racing, looking around me at all the strength related equipment - what kind of brute could be running this ship? Well boy did I feel silly when I met Dave who is one of the nicest guys you could ever come across and a very motivated trainer. We discussed options for frequency of visits and how he could also work up a program for me that I could memorize and do at Jeff's gym as well. Everything else aside his openness and willingness to work with my schedule was phenomenal. His center is a pretty cool place and actually gave me flashbacks to Brock Lesnar's prime time specials prior to his fight with Velasquez.

I'm finally on the necessary course for health and fitness to get in shape safely and healthily under the guidance of two very health savvy gentleman. It makes me wonder where I would be if I had never approached Jeff about weight loss in the first place - because I certainly wouldn't be this far down the path. People tend to consider MMA fighters as brutes who scream "Kill! Death! Murder!" but the fact is guys like Jeff Curran put that presumption to rest in quick fashion. He's not only a fighter searching for his path back to the UFC but a dedicated and motivated teacher and an extremely resourceful guy. Now I continue my quest towards health under the guidance of both Jeff and Dave while furthering my knowledge of MMA through learning the skills these men and women use in the cage.

UFC 148: Chael Sonnen on Anderson Silva - "I'm going to beat him on July 7 because I want it more than he does"

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

SonnenChael_GG180_19.jpg
During Monday's UFC 148 media conference call, Chael Sonnen was relatively quiet, with Anderson Silva finally cracking and making some of the harshest public comments he's ever made regarding an opponent. Sonnen opted not to give much of a response during the call, but he said afterward that he's not buying much into anything about Silva, let alons the comments made on Monday.

"People can't understand why I'm not getting caught up on the hype of Anderson Silva, but he can't take the magazine covers and press stories into the Octagon with him," Sonnen said in comments released by the UFC. "He's just a man with two arms, two legs - and I'm going to beat him on July 7 because I want it more than he does."

Sonnen then went into hard sell mode, making it clear he's got one thing on his mind come UFC 148: The UFC Middleweight Championship.

"I don't need anything in my life - but I have to have that belt," he said. "Everything I've done, everything I've worked for and sacrificed - everything I have in life - I would give it all away to be the UFC Champion for just one night."

Additonally, UFC President Dana White commented on Silva's tirade, a rant the likes of which he's never witnessed from the man he considers the "greatest mixed martial artist ever."

"I've promoted every Anderson Silva fight since he's been in the UFC in 2006, and I've never heard him talk even remotely like this," White commented. "He is usually so respectful and doesn't say anything negative or disrespectful. I've never heard Anderson talk like this once – and I've never heard Chael be so sincere about how bad he wants to win this fight and what it means to him to be the UFC World Champion."

Penick's Analysis: This may be the biggest fight the UFC promotes this year, and it's getting raised up even further after Silva's comments on Monday. He's been mostly silent in the lead up to this fight, but this came at the perfect time. There isn't much in the way of sporting events this weekend, giving enough time for the comments to gestate and stick with fans heading into the pay-per-view next weekend. The UFC is expecting to hit the one million mark for pay-per-view buys for the event, a mark they haven't hit since 2010, and this will only help. As for Sonnen, he's turned off the over the top Chael P. Sonnen persona, and in the final weeks before the fight he's taking a serious note. This is the fight he desperately wants to win after coming so close in 2010, and it's his last chance to keep himself at the top of the MMA world.

Dana White seeing a side of Anderson Silva he's never seen ahead of UFC 148

Anderson Silva has reached some uncharted territory, at least as far as his boss is concerned.

The typically reserved UFC middleweight champion on Monday opened up in a way he hasn't done before. On a media conference call for his UFC 148 title fight against Chael Sonnen, Silva eschewed his infamous one-word answers in favor of promises to his opponent that he'll leave their July 7 fight with broken limbs.

And that seemed to surprise even Dana White.

MMA Marketplace: Rich Franklin’s not-awful UFC 147 Affliction walkout shirt

Among the companies who sponsor fighters and make MMA clothing, Affliction is at the bottom of the ladder. Its clothes are usually badly designed and overpriced, but with their shirt for Rich Franklin for UFC 147, they did alright.

It's a cool, aviator nod to his nickname "Ace," and though a skull is used, it's not overdone. It's still ridiculously overpriced at $57.95, but at least it's not ugly and overpriced.

Rashad Evans says bout with Anderson Silva the only one he'd take at middleweight in the UFC

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

EvansRashad_GG180_14.jpg
"I thought about [moving to middleweight], then I thought about how hard that weight cut is. I used to wrestle at 174 in college, I would cut so much weight on a continuous basis and I was like, 'You know what? If I ever have to compete again, I'm not cutting weight like that.' Because what ends up happening is, the philosophy is, 'Oh well you go down to a lower weight and you'll be stronger.' Not necessarily. Some people go down to a lower weight and they're actually weaker, and I felt like when I was the best athlete I could be in college wrestling, is when I wrestled to my natural weight. So that's what I try to do in fighting, I try to compete at my natural weight. I may go to 185 and not be the same fighter because I'm maybe cutting too much weight.

Anderson [Silva] is somebody I would love to fight because when it's all said and done, whether you win or lose, to compete against the best in the sport is really what it's all about. You know, if I can walk away from my career and say I competed against some of the best in the sport in my time and era, then I can wrap up and say I had a really great career. So if the opportunity comes, and that fight happens, yeah I would drop to 185 to fight."

-Rashad Evans talks to ProMMANow.com about his thoughts on moving to middleweight (transcribed by Fight Cove).

Penick's Analysis: That's the type of fight the UFC could be more likely to put together than some others, but that doesn't necessarily make it a likelihood. Evans is in a tough spot at 205 lbs. right now after his loss to Jones. He's capable of defeating just about anyone in the division, but with how the first fight played out a rematch isn't going to happen anytime soon. If he did want to make a drop to middleweight, he'd be much more likely to make another title run. As he doesn't want to make that move, he's stuck for now. He'll have to figure out just what makes the most sense for him, and if that's keeping himself at 205 lbs. with no title opportunities anytime soon, that's where he'll stay. But a bout between Rashad and Anderson Silva could make for a really good event for the UFC sometime in the next year.

Dos Santos vs Velasquez II title fight now unlikely for UFC 152 in Toronto

UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos still will rematch ex-titleholder Cain Velasquez in his next bout.

It just may no longer be at UFC 152 at Toronto's Air Canada Centre.

Following Saturday's UFC 147 event, UFC president Dana White suggested the Sept. 22 fight date may no longer work for the heavily anticipated rematch.

UFC on FX 4 Bonuses: Swanson, Miller, Stout, and Fisher earn extra $50,000

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Four fighters earned an extra $50,000 for their efforts on Friday night in Atlantic City, as the UFC handed out bonuses in that amount to Cub Swanson, Dan Miller, Sam Stout, and Spencer Fisher.

Swanson took home the "Knockout of the Night" for his second round finish of Ross Pearson. The fight arguably should have been the "Fight of the Night" as well, as it was a fantastic fight between two evenly matched fighters, with both doing damage back and forth and landing several big strikes on one another. Swanson finally finished it with two rights and a follow up left hook late in the second round, sending Pearson down against the cage.

The actual "Fight of the Night" bonus went to Stout and Fisher for their three round trilogy bout. Stout earned his second win over Fisher, taking a unanimous decision in what appeared to be a much closer fight than the 30-27 scores suggested.

Finally, Miller took the night's "Submission of the Night" in his welterweight debut. He latched on a guillotine choke over Ricardo Funch in the third round of their bout, avoiding a potential decision loss and halting a two-fight losing streak.
